Recognizing Interpretation

What it is

Human beings rarely react to reality alone.

Most reactions are responses to the meaning automatically attached to experience.

A message becomes rejection. Silence becomes disapproval. Delay becomes danger.

The interpretation often happens so quickly that it feels like reality itself.

This practice helps create a small but important space between what happens and the story the mind creates about it.

The practice

The next time you feel emotionally activated, pause and ask yourself:

What actually happened?

What interpretation appeared immediately?

Is the interpretation the only possible explanation?

Do not force yourself to think positively.

Do not invalidate your feelings.

Simply notice the difference between the event itself and the meaning attached to it.

Awareness often begins there.
