What it is
Many people were never taught how to remain present with emotion.
They learned to suppress it, explain it away, discharge it immediately, or escape from it.
But emotions often change when they are allowed to exist within awareness without immediate reaction.
This practice develops the capacity to stay gently present with emotional experience without becoming overwhelmed or disconnected.
The practice
The next time an emotion appears, pause before reacting.
Instead of asking: "How do I get rid of this?"
Ask:
What does this feel like in my body?
What happens if I stay present for a few moments?
Does the emotion change when I stop resisting it?
You do not need to analyze the emotion immediately.
Sometimes awareness itself begins the regulation process.
