09 III — Body & Nervous System

Conscious Breathing

What it is

Breathing continuously reflects the state of the nervous system.

When people are stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected, breathing often becomes shallow, rapid, or unconscious.

Conscious breathing is not about controlling the body perfectly.

It is about re-establishing contact with the present moment through one of the most immediate processes of being alive.

The practice

Several times today, pause and notice your breathing without changing it immediately.

Then slowly deepen one breath. Not dramatically. Not forcefully.

Simply allow: a slower inhale, a softer exhale, a little more space.

Notice:

What changes in your body?

What changes in your thoughts?

What changes emotionally?

Sometimes regulation begins with something very small.
